Athlete of the Month for April 2019 Dr. Zoe Cohen

Taking honors as the April 2019, Athlete of the Month is the Mod Squad Sweet Heart Dr. Zoe Cohen! There are so many reasons why she is deserving of this award, being sincere, kind, humble, and helpful to others are the first that come to mind. One remarkable thing about Zoe, despite having what some would consider a major physical limitation (a full hip replacement), she makes no excuses why she can't do something and only finds ways how to do them. It's an attitude that is contagious in the gym and in many ways has helped others become more fit. 

 

Thank you Zoe for all that you do to make Bion a better place!

 

Below is a Q&A I had with Zoe. Enjoy!  

 

1. How did you find out about Bion CrossFit?    

Cassie Everly was a student in my class as well as an officer in the Physiology Club. She was always talking about cross-fit and trying to get me to try it! She finally got me by telling me her mom was going to boot-camp. I thought, “well, if your mom can do it, so can I”…From the first time I walked in the door, I knew this was something special. Not only did I really like Cassie’s mom, but the encouragement from the trainers was amazing! I started with 1 day a week, then 2, then 4, now 6 days a week!! 

 

2. What motivates you to wake up every morning and get to the gym? 

The Mod Squad!! I’m always excited to work out with my friends! I know that if I didn’t show up, I’d get emails and texts asking where I was (and I do the same with them). Plus I really like seeing what I’m capable of…I read the WODs as soon as they are posted on Sunday…and get excited for the week ahead (unless I see burpees!!). Really, this honor is a Mod Squad Honor!!

 

3.  What do you do for a living?

I’m an assistant professor (hopefully soon an associate professor) of Physiology at the University of Arizona. I teach Cardiovascular Physiology and Immunology. All my students know about Bion and I’ve started bringing some with me to Momo’s mystery class on Fridays!

 

4. How has staying physically fit helped you in your day to day life?     

Feeling strong makes me feel confident. When I teach, or lead a meeting…I fall back on my workouts to help my confidence. Plus, I haven’t needed to ask for help opening spaghetti sauce jars since I started (this is a big deal for me)!! Also, I hope I’m motivation for my students to get and stay active!

 

5.  You are in inspiration to many, despite having a full hip replacement you have never made an excuse not to do CrossFit. What advice would you give to someone who might be scared to try CrossFit due to "old injuries."

Trust your trainers (and if you don’t, you should join Bion!)…I always feel secure in the fact that the trainers will come up with something that I can do…but at the same time, they never let me “not try”…I can’t jump rope normally…so always did step ups…but then with Stevie’s encouragement, tried one-legged jumping…now I’m a one-legged jumping fool!

 

6. Favorite meal of the day?  What would your favorite meal be? 

Breakfast is my favorite meal!! If I could have eggs and potatoes all day, every day, I would! However, I now have to add that I’d want dessert as part of my breakfast and that would be anything that Grace bakes!

 

7. Fitness Goals for 2019?  

My big goal is a pull-up! I’d like to get it before my birthday (June)…so I’m running out of time!! I also believe that Melissa Everly and I are thinking (just thinking) about doing Green Valley…that’s scary and exciting to even think about!

 

8.  Best pump up song?   

 I like things from the ‘80s. Jane’s Addiction- Been Caught Stealing

 

9. If you could design a workout named "Zoe" what would it be? 

Pretty much anything that doesn’t have burpees!!

10. Favorite movie of all time? 

Breaking Away! If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth it! It’s about a young bike racer who tries to be Italian (because Italians are the best bike racers)…It’s old, 1979 (that’s when I started bike racing myself). I can quote the entire movie!! Man…now I need to go and watch it again!! So good!!
